Nathan Piper

Nathan Piper's first NRHA competition was at a Texas Reining Horse Association youth show where he and Faith Dry Doc topped the 14–18 class. It was, as he would later reflect, the start of a career that would take him to the highest level of the sport — even if the road there wound through more valleys than he might have anticipated.

Piper was born in Bryan, Texas, where his sister Lauren's wish for a pony introduced the family to 4-H and horses. He discovered reining, got hooked, and spent his teenage years honing his craft — including time in Marietta, Oklahoma, with horseman James Davidson and NRHA Hall of Famer Dick Pieper, whose influence shaped Piper's foundational horsemanship.

During his junior year at Texas A&M University, he made the decision that defined his professional life: he gave up his Non Pro card to pursue a career as an NRHA Professional. He graduated in 1999, married his wife Jean in 2000, and moved to Whitesboro, Texas, to work as an assistant trainer under two-time NRHA Futurity Champion Todd Sommers — one of the most respected mentors in the business.

In 2004, Piper and Jean purchased their own training facility in Madisonville, Texas, where they built Nathan Piper Reining Horses from the ground up. The early years were hard. 'Those first ten years were long, just starting from the beginning and learning,' Piper has said. 'Every time I would doubt myself, I would pray, and God would answer, Keep going.'

The decade of perseverance paid off. In March 2022, at the Cactus Reining Classic in Arizona, Piper rode Shannon and Hershel Reid's stallion Patriot to a third-place finish in the L4 Open qualifier and crossed the NRHA Million Dollar Rider threshold — with his entire family present, having driven to Arizona specifically for the moment. 'Becoming a Million Dollar Rider is definitely one of the major goals I've had,' he said.

That same year, Patriot carried Piper to the Run For A Million Championship at the South Point Equestrian Center in Las Vegas — the most lucrative single event in reining history. The win, in front of a stacked field including Flarida, Schmersal, Deary, and McCutcheon, established Piper as one of the sport's premier competitors at the highest level.

2022 was also the year he was named the NRHA Professional of the Year — a peer-voted title that recognized not just his show pen success but his character, his involvement in his local affiliate, and his contributions to the NRHA community. He and Jean moved their operation back to Whitesboro that year, completing a journey that began in the same community where he'd first learned the business.
