Tom McCutcheon

Tom McCutcheon represents something rare in professional sport — a champion whose influence extends as far beyond the arena as within it. Born into the performance horse business in western Wisconsin, Tom joined his father Bob and three brothers as a professional horse trainer, carrying a family tradition into one of the sport's most prestigious careers.

He founded Tom McCutcheon Reining Horses, Inc. in Aubrey, Texas — a 250-horse facility north of Denton that has become one of the premier reining, breeding, and rehabilitation operations in the United States. The facility's commitment to excellence is visible in everything from the state-of-the-art stalls and turnout areas to the four champion stallions that stand there.

In the competition pen, McCutcheon's signature achievement came at the 2010 World Equestrian Games in Lexington, Kentucky, where he rode Gunners Special Nite to both the Individual Gold Medal and Team Gold Medal — a performance the United States Equestrian Federation honored by naming him USEF Equestrian of the Year and Gunners Special Nite as USEF Horse of the Year for 2010.

His competition record also includes the NRBC Open Championship, two NRHA Derby Reserve Championships, the Tradition Open Futurity Championship, the FEI World Reining Finals Championship, and numerous NRHA major event finals appearances across a career spanning more than two decades.

Beyond competition, McCutcheon has had an outsized impact on the structure of the sport itself. He is a co-founder and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Reining Breeders Classic — the largest added-money reining event and stallion incentive program in history. He has also served on the USEF Board of Directors and the NRHA Professionals Committee.

The McCutcheon family is quite literally reining royalty. His wife Mandy — daughter of legendary trainer Tim McQuay and NRHA Hall of Fame inductee — is the only woman to surpass $3 million as an NRHA Non Pro and won the NRHA Futurity an unprecedented ten times. Their son Cade became the youngest NRHA Open Futurity Champion in history in 2019 and has since surpassed $3 million in Open earnings. Their daughter Carlee is also a successful professional competitor.

The McCutcheon ranch was featured in a reining scene in the Yellowstone television universe — a fitting recognition of a family whose story is as compelling as any written for television.
